More than just design: the trends shaping furniture for the hospitality industry
Over the 25 years since Furniture Fusion was founded, we’ve supplied furniture for hundreds of bars, restaurants, hotels and leisure projects. While everyone’s business has changed dramatically over that time, the challenges facing the hospitality sector are clear to see. From rising operating costs and the difficulty of recruiting to sustainability targets and increased competition, there are commercial realities which shape how today’s hospitality sector looks much more than aesthetic trends.
While the hospitality industry continues to evolve, these shifts aren’t just affecting menus or service models, but are also changing what operators need from their interiors. Furniture has become much more than a finishing touch and now needs to support wider business goals, including flexibility, efficiency and of course long-term value. Rather than focusing on colour palettes or design influences, this article explores the business trends which shape furniture specification for the hospitality industry.
Flexible spaces
With pressure to make every square metre work, flexible spaces are becoming the norm - whether it’s hotel lobbies serving as coworking spaces during the day, restaurants hosting private events or cafés and bars offering evening dining, many venues no longer serve a single purpose and operators need furniture that can adapt throughout the day.
Stackable chairs and bar stools give ultimate flexibility, allowing furniture to be added, removed or moved according to business requirements, while also being easy and efficient to store when not in use.

Modular seating is another smart choice, giving hospitality operators the freedom to create combinations to suit their space, adding or removing components as required - our Pebble modular seating is a great example.
Durable Design
Replacing damaged furniture is expensive - not just because of purchase costs, but because of downtime and disruption. While budgets are always an important consideration, we’re finding that more clients are considering the lifetime value of the furniture they select for hospitality projects, rather than just going for the cheapest option.
This may mean selecting products which are designed for heavy use - perfect for areas such as bars, cafés, restaurants and hotels which are busy throughout the day - or which have easily-replaceable components. It’s something to bear in mind when thinking about upholstery too - choose leather or faux-leather for a long-lasting, easy-to-clean finish, or talk to our team about which fabrics and trims will work best for your interior.
Our recent project at Lírica restaurant at the Cumberland Hotel, London was a great example of this - we transformed armchairs, side chairs, bar stools and lounge stools by reupholstering in some fantastic fabrics and faux leathers to create something very special.

Sustainable style
Closely linked to the desire for more durable furniture, environmental considerations are increasingly influencing purchasing decisions for hotel, bar, restaurant and other commercial interiors.
In the twenty-five years since Furniture Fusion was founded, this has gone from a somewhat niche concern to something that’s discussed in every project. Clients and designers want to know about the carbon footprint of the sofa, chair, table or stool that they’re thinking of - what materials are used, where the products are manufactured and how long they’ll last.
It’s something that we’ve chosen to showcase in our installations for recent HIX London events, with our memorable ‘Our Place’ listening bar concept featuring sustainable seating from BlackCork, table tops made using eco-friendly Foresso and upholstery fabrics from Panaz, ILIV and Sunbury.
Take It outside
Over recent years, we’ve seen an incredible increase in demand for outdoor furniture, with real care and consideration given to how outside spaces look and function. Longer and warmer summers play a part but outdoor spaces are now used year-round, from outside dining to rooftop bars, hotel courtyards and covered terraces.
As a result, operators are now investing heavily in outdoor furniture and looking for stylish pieces in weather-resistant materials. A far cry from the basic plastic or metal garden chairs of the past, we are seeing a real increase in demand for comfortable outdoor seating, with upholstery and cushioning to create somewhere for guests to linger longer.

The same concern over customer comfort drives decision-making for furniture for hotels, bars, restaurants, lobbies and lounges, recognising that guests spend more time in venues that feel welcoming and comfortable. In addition to longer dwell time, customers are more likely to make repeat visits and have a more positive experience overall.
